HELP! I CAN’T ESCAPE MY MIND! Design Statement By Kai M Huntoon

HELP! I CAN’T ESCAPE MY MIND!  Explores the problematic ideology of perceptive viewpoints. We as humans, naturally want to “fit in“, however who is deeming our acceptance other than the tainted minds surrounding us? We find our acceptance based off of affirmation, but the person affirming us is using their perceptive ideas to deem us as acceptable, which leaves us in a constant need for approval. This garment design translates the ethereal concept by drawing reference from dark statuesque figures that remain unknown and mysterious in the night. This concept can be seen in the hooded cowl feature, allowing the model to cover their face. The ruching up the back of the garment, which is what is shaping the lower half of dress, mimics the texture of something being smashed and manipulated. The long and slender silhouette also pays homage to a grimace and slender figure lurking in our minds, much similarly in relation to the perceptions of the people around us. This design is curated in a slinky black knit, cut on the bias allowing for heavy drapery and garment manipulation with the forces of gravity. This design is simple, yet adequately portrays an idea of a dark force.
